central plant air conditioning. russian market 2005

Methodology

The Russian Central Conditioning systems market research conducted in 2005 was based on a mixture of methodologies:

I. In – depth customs analysis

As the practice shows, the data resulted from the customs statistics analysis becomes more reliable from year to year.

  1. In 2005 more than 90% of chillers supplied to Russia were identified by models. These were only Clivet, McQuay and Daikin equipment that appeared to be a matter of some difficulty. The point is that the information on Clivet and McQuay equipment is usually contained in the declaration overleaf that can not be obtained by e-mail. As for Daikin, the distributors supply usually mini-chillers together with splits. So, they are also often stated in the declaration overleaf. In these cases the information was obtained from the distributors directly. The customs analysis is an only way enabling to identify equipment supplied by foreign construction companies and end users round about the official distribution channels. And this information is very important for obtaining an undistorted supply pattern. So, in 2005 the Turkish companies, notably Odak, delivered 18 McQuay chillers of 16,2 MW capacity in total. This amount accounted for 45% of total McQuay supplies in terms of capacity. Also, 147 Climaveneta mini-chillers of 3 MW capacity in total were supplied indirectly. This amount takes 55% share in total sales, but it is insignificant in terms of total capacity.
  2. As practice shows, the customs data analysis enables to identify about 80% of supplied fan coils. The problems arise only with brands making fan coils in addition to Splits and often supplying them as indoor units of Splits. That is why McQuay, York and Daikin fan coils supply data was obtained from suppliers.
  3. Information on up to 90% of Air handling units (AHUs) supplies can be also followed-up through the customs statistics. However, this type equipment can not always be identified by standard size. It is also possible to obtain information about locally-produced AHUs, as they use foreign ventilation wheels.
  4. Chiller style compressor-condenserunits are in the same situation as chillers. A number of compressor-condenserunits can be calculated as the difference between high output outdoor and indoor units considering that the process of replacing high output units has not practically started yet. In a number of cases these figures were verified in interviews with suppliers.

II. Interviews with suppliers and manufacturers.

In the course of this report preparation interviews with all the major Russian manufacturers and most big suppliers of foreign equipment were undertaken.

TABLE. Information sources

Russian manufacturers Representative offices of foreign companies Distributors Total
Face to face interviews 7 5 18 30
Phone interviews 4 4 7 15

III. Face to face interviews with installers.

In the course of regional business trips face to face interviews with more than 300 regional companies, the ventilation and conditioning market players, were conducted. This enabled to verify, to make much more accurate and, in a number of cases, to work out in detail the data obtained in the course of interviews with distributors and manufacturers.
