REGIONAL DIVISON OF RUSSIA
The Russian Federation is the largest nation of the world. Its territory is three times larger that of Western Europe. This explains significant climate, economic and cultural differences between various regions of the country.
The first attempt to divide the country into economic areas was made as early as in the Soviet Union formation times in 1921-22. The process of the country division was completed in 1963. The Russian Federation territory was divided into several large regions consolidating districts, territories and republics with similar economic, nature and social conditions.
And, finally, in 2000 it was proposed to divide Russia into federal okrugs comprising several neighboring economic areas.
- North-Western federal okrug (Leningrad, Pskov, Novgorod, Kaliningrad, Vologda, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk Regions, city of St. Petersbourg, Karelian and Komi Republics);
- Central federal okrug (Belgorod, Bryansk, Vladimir, Voronezh, Ivanov, Kaluga, Kostroma, Kursk, Moskow, Lipetsk, Orlov, Ryazan, Smolensk, Tambov, Tver, Tula and Yaroslav Regions, the city of Moscow ),
- Volga federal okrug (Nizhni Novgorod, Kirovsk, Orenburg, Penza, Perm, Samara, Saratov and Ulyanovsk Regions, Tatarstan, Baschkortostan, Udmurt, Mari El, Mordovia and Chuvashia Republics)
- Southern federal okrug (Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov Regions, Adygeia, Dagestan, Nothern Osetia – Alaniya, Kabardino-Balkaria, Kalmykia, Karachai-Cherkess, Inguschetia and Chechnia Republics)
- Ural federal okrug (Kurgan, Sverdlov, Tyumen and Chelyabinsk Regions)
- Siberian federal okrug (Altai and Krasnodar Territories, Irkutsk, Kemerov, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk and Chita Regions, Altai, Buryat, Tuva and Khakass Republics)
- Far-Eastern federal okrug (Republic of Sakha– Yakutia, Primorski and Khabarovsk Territories, Amursk, Kamchatka, Magadan, Sakhalin Regions, Chukot and Jewish Autonomous Areas)
The three-year study experience in the climate equipment market has shown that Russia's division by federal okrugs can be taken as a basis for the regional division of the climate equipment market with only the following two exceptions:
- The city of Moscow and Moscow Region are to be reviewed separately as high living standards of these regions sharply contrast not only with that of the neighboring regions but also of the whole country.
- Due to its specific climate features Perm Region is to be considered as a part of the Ural federal okrug.
